Three House | Design Madeleine Blanchfield

ALPI wood veneers were chosen by Madeleine Blanchfield for the interiors of her home in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. By inverting the typical arrangement of a two-storey house and placing the living areas on the top floor, the 1920s bungalow is flooded with light and captures an outlook into the treetops. The removal of unnecessary spaces and corridors allowed the focus to be on the volumes, finishes and spatial quality. The streamlining of circulation and massive windows offer a flowing layout, with trees in the front and garden views at the rear. The garden is an important feature, seen from all rooms. Muted and warm finishes create a calm, uplifting atmosphere. An ever-present tension between warm and cool channels a delicate sense of balance and beauty. The double-height central core of the house is panelled with bespoke ALPI Oak veneer created upon request from Madeleine Blanchfield Architects. Its pale blond hue personalises walls, doors and a large bookcase. The same wood was used to clad the frames of the large sliding-glass doors, emphasising the feeling of continuity between indoors and out, between nature and home.
